Can You Grow Lavender Indoors? What Really Works

Lavender can live in a pot, but none of the sources read for this guide describes it as an easy houseplant. The RHS lavender growing guide says it needs lots of sun and fast-draining soil, the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension advises the sunniest and coolest room of the house for an indoor plant, and the Clemson HGIC herbs factsheet says herbs grown inside need plenty of sunlight from a south- or west-facing window. If you cannot give that light, lavender is likely to struggle.

What the sources agree on

NeedWhat the sources say
LightLots of sun (RHS); sunniest and coolest room (Arkansas); at least six hours of sun, south or west window indoors (Clemson)
Soil and drainageFast-draining; lots of coarse grit, up to 25 percent by volume (RHS)
WaterWater thoroughly then let the soil dry somewhat (Clemson); keep containers fairly dry in winter (RHS)
FeedingLow-nutrient soil, generally no feeding (RHS)
PruningTrim after flowering and do not cut into old wood (RHS)

Which lavender

The RHS lavender plant guide says English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia and L. x intermedia) is hardy and long-lived, French lavender (L. stoechas) is slightly less hardy, and some species such as L. canariensis and L. dentata need protection over winter. It says nothing about which suits indoor growing. Best Lavender Varieties for Pots covers what the RHS does list.

The main ways it fails

Wet roots and too little light are the two causes the sources point to most, and Why Indoor Lavender Dies goes through each. The pot and mix matter as much as the window, so see Lavender Potting Mix and Drainage, and for trimming, how to prune potted lavender (a guide follows on 26 October).

Pets

The ASPCA lavender entry lists lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) as toxic to dogs and cats, naming linalool and linalyl acetate and listing nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. See Fragrant Houseplants That Are Toxic to Cats and Dogs.

Frequently asked questions

Can lavender grow indoors all year?

The sources do not describe year-round indoor growing. They stress strong sun and dry conditions, which most rooms do not provide.

Does lavender need a south window?

Clemson says herbs grown inside need plenty of sunlight from a south- or west-facing window.

Should I fertilize lavender?

The RHS says it prefers low-nutrient soil and generally does not need feeding.
