Overwatering or Underwatering: Which Drops Flower Buds?

The sources read for this site name both too much and too little water as causes of flower bud drop, and none says which is more common. Clemson lists over- or under-watering among the causes of gardenia bud drop, and the RHS gardenia guide says bud drop is usually caused by extreme or fluctuating temperatures or by irregular watering. The common thread is irregularity, not one direction.

What each source says

SourcePlantWatering finding
ClemsonGardeniaBud drop causes include low humidity, over- or under-watering, insufficient light and high temperatures
RHSGardeniaIrregular watering is a usual cause; keep compost constantly moist but not saturated in spring and summer, water less in winter without letting it dry out
RHSHoyaOverwatering or poor drainage causes dropping leaves, blackening, dieback and root rot
NC StateStephanotisAbundant water in summer growth, very little when cool; too much water causes root rot

How to check before you water

Illinois Extension (watering check) says to push a finger into the mix to your second knuckle and skip watering if it is still moist, and that if the pot feels light when lifted it may be time to water. It says to water until some runs out the drainage holes and to empty saucers after about 30 minutes. That article is about plants coming indoors, but the test applies to any pot.

Why irregular is the problem

The RHS names irregular watering, not just too much or too little, and Clemson lists both extremes plus root rots in poorly drained soil. The simplest reading is steady moisture suited to the plant and good drainage. See Gardenia Bud Drop and Watering Gardenia.

What the sources do not cover

No source says which mistake drops more buds, or gives a watering interval in days, so this page does not rank them.
