Thrips can look like bud drop. Clemson lists flower buds that die before opening, silvery speckles on leaves and distorted or brown flowers as thrips signs, and Colorado State lists silvery patches, tiny dark fecal spots and scarred or distorted buds and petals. Aphids cluster on new growth and leave honeydew. The sources read give general first steps and warn against relying on sprays.

How to confirm thrips
Clemson HGIC gardenia insects says to hold white paper under tapped blooms in bright sunlight, or gently blow into flowers to make thrips visible. Colorado State says blue or yellow sticky traps catch adults.
What the sources suggest
For thrips, Colorado State says soaps or oils work on exposed stages, that many strains resist insecticides, and that thrips can spread plant viruses. The RHS pelargonium guide also lists thrips among sap-feeding insects that can spread viruses. For aphids, both Clemson and Colorado State say to wash them off with water, and Colorado State adds crushing by hand and yellow sticky traps for winged adults. Clemson says to avoid contact insecticides where possible to protect natural enemies, and to use only products labeled safe for gardenias. This page does not recommend products.
Is it thrips or bud drop?
Clemson lists bud drop causes as low humidity, over- or under-watering, insufficient light and high temperatures. If the buds are scarred, speckled or distorted, suspect thrips; if they simply yellow and fall, see Gardenia Bud Drop.
What the sources do not cover
They give no indoor-specific thrips program and no timing for houseplants. See Gardenia Pests Indoors for the full pest table.
