Lavender needs as much sun as you can give it. The RHS lavender growing guide says it needs lots of sun, the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension advises the sunniest and coolest room of the house for an indoor plant, and the Clemson HGIC herbs factsheet says almost all herbs grow best where it is sunny for at least six hours a day and that herbs grown inside need plenty of sunlight from a south- or west-facing window. None gives a light level in lux or a grow-light setup.
What the sources say
| Source | Light advice |
|---|---|
| RHS | Full sun; lots of sun |
| Arkansas Extension | Sunniest and coolest room of the house |
| Clemson | At least six hours of sun a day; south- or west-facing window indoors |
| Illinois Extension (houseplants generally) | Brightest, sunniest window, ideally south or west; supplemental lighting if there is none |
Reading this for a room
A south- or west-facing window with direct sun for most of the day is the described target. Illinois adds that without such a window, supplemental lighting is the alternative. How much light a lavender needs from a lamp is not stated, so see Will a Grow Light Make Plants Flower? for what is established. The full picture is in Why Indoor Lavender Dies.
What the sources do not cover
There is no hours-per-day figure for lamps, no distance, and no description of lavender in a north or east window. Can You Grow Lavender Indoors? lists the other requirements.
